Timber Used

Stoddart’s use any timbers as specified by their customers provided it can be readily obtained but recommend the use of imported plantation timbers.

The timber most commonly used by Stoddart’s in the manufacture of internal and external joinery items is Western Red Cedar.

This durable and versatile timber originates in Canada and is grown in a commercial plantation setting. It’s variety of distinctive colours, grain and finish make it popular with customers and craftsmen alike.

Other joinery timbers used include Surian (New Guinea Red Cedar) and New Guinea Rosewood while hardwood such as Merbau (Kwilla) is used for steps, sills etc. Stoddart’s do not use any softwood for sills or steps. Australian native timbers are rarely used although they are becoming more popular because of their fire rating properties.

Stoddart’s do not use veneered products for external applications in window and door frame construction. Life expectancy for veneered products is much shorter than properly maintained solid timber windows and doors. Windows and doors (that have been properly maintained) made by Stoddart’s up to 100 years ago can still be seen in near perfect working order today.
